Green glue alternative? Soundproofing is an ideal way to minimize external noise and being more comfortable in your home. However, this can be costly; buying materials and having them installed in your home may require remodeling which isn’t cheap. See some of cheap soundproofing materials you can get them on Amazon and have them delivered the next day on your doorstep.

Luckily, there are new products available on the market which are cost effective and require less work. Green Glue is the most popular soundproofing material. However, if Green Glue seems too pricey, not accessible in your locality, or there’s a specific reason you do not want to use it, we will be looking at other alternatives to Green Glue. Green Glue Noise-proofing Compound

Green Glue soundproofing compound is very effective at reducing noise. It is made of a polymeric formula which converts mechanical energy directly into tiny quantities of heat. When Green Glue is applied between 2 materials, it builds up a damping system which absorbs sound waves and reduces its penetration into your room. Compare Green Glue Prices

This product can be utilized in several applications ranging from renovations to new construction. Any homeowner can easily apply it. With the use of a caulking gun, it can be easily applied to flooring and wall surfaces without requiring any major demolition.

Here is the price of only one tube of green glue, but without any discount for buying larger quantities.

Green Glue isn’t for only residential structures. The versatile soundproofing compound can be used in apartment buildings, industrial buildings, commercial buildings, hospitals and much more. So, Green Glue will certainly work effectively, no matter what kind of project you’re working on.

Before choosing Green Glue, you should keep in mind that it has to be sandwiched between 2 materials like drywall, so an extra layer of material will be added to your floors and walls. Check latest price on Amazon.

Alternatives to Green Glue That Work

1. QuietRock Soundproofing Drywall

Quiet Rock is an alternative, but very effective noise-proofing product as well. It comes in panels of different thicknesses, ranging from 1/2 inch to 1-3/8 inch which can be easily placed over any existing drywall. See photos and user reviews online

The most popular is the QuietRock 500 because its installation is the easiest, and there is no need for special tools. QuietRock 500 is relatively thin, easy to handle, and as effective as other gypsum panels. But due to its engineered design, it outperforms other traditional double-layer gypsum panel systems.

QuietRock paneling system isn’t recommended for ceilings but is perfect for walls. Although it is effective for new construction, it is highly favored by those who’re seeking to remodel their existing homes. The product can be installed easily by any homeowner, saving them more money meant for labor.

One thing I particularly like about QuietRock is its ability to keep providing noise-proofing even after fixtures such as TVs have been installed on it. So if you’re remodeling your home and need an easy and quick way to ensure maximum soundproofing, you should go for QuietRock 500. Check my recommended brand and photos

2. Mass Loaded Vinyl

Mass Loaded Vinyl is another excellent solution for soundproofing your home effectively and easily. It carries a large quantity of mass in a little amount of thickness. See my recommendations here.

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) is perfect for people who want a quieter work environment or home, and will not compromise the dimensions and space of a room. It can be used in several places such as in ceilings and walls, wrapped around your noisy pipes, or under the carpet to noise-proof the ceiling of a room below.

3. DYNAFLEX 230

Another alternative is the DYNAFLEX 230 available now in Home Depot with these new prices which delivers a latex formulation that is “Silicone Tough” for an outstanding performance against exterior elements.

5 Green Glue Alternatives (Best For DIY Soundproofing Projects)

Developed for crack-proof performance and flexibility, this sealant endures contraction and expansion without losing its seal or cracking. The durable, paintable sealant can fill gaps of 1-inch width, and the cured sealant is mildew and mold resistant. It does an excellent adhesion job on a wide range of building materials such as composite trim board, polystyrene, PVC, and MDF, as well as in your home wall and ceilings. It tools smoothly, can be cleaned up with water and soap and is easy to gun out. It can be used both for interior and exterior jobs. It meets ASTM specification. See Dynaflex photos here

4. Red Glue

Red glue is a great green glue alternative damping product which is ideal for renovation projects and new construction. The compound’s unique features make it function effectively as a damping material, dissipating the vibrations which are caused by sound waves traveling through floors, walls, and ceilings.

It takes only a few minutes to apply the Red Glue compound to a piece of plasterboard (or rigid construction materials.) It is easy to soundproof your room in a day, or even less. For the best results, cure time is about 7 days, and the compound will reach its maximum performance thirty days after application. See my recommended brand here

This is another one with these prices in Home Depot

They can also be used for school projects. Designed to be used with any high-temperature glue guns, Red Glue is a stress-free way to adhere materials together. You should never leave the glue to dry completely; else, it won’t adhere to any paper. Each unit (25 pieces per unit) will produce about 75 seals if the instructions are followed. Buy it on Amazon today

5. Polyurethane

Another alternative to Green Glue, Polyurethane is a super-tough varnish which is formulated for its microscopic chain of resin molecules will bond firmly as it dries. This results in a finish which is more resistant to abrasion, solvents, water, and impacts than conventional varnishes.

Some polyurethane have oils which give the wood a warm and amber tone. You can use water-based polyurethane if you want your wood to retain its light color.

Kinds of Polyurethane

Oil-based Polyurethane: This turns a bit amber, and warms up the color of your wood. It forms a durable film, is higher in VOCs, and dries slower than water-based polyurethane. You can clean with mineral spirits. The product is available, well priced in Home Depot from Varathane. This has a good price and I have not tested it. Also check photos and user reviews here in Amazon

Water-based: This looks like milk in a can, but it dries crystal clear. It’s good for preserving the color of your wood. It needs more coats it is more watery than the oil-based polyurethanes. It dries quickly and is lower in VOCs, but still needs ventilation while applying. You can clean with water and soap.

Jan Achenbach
Acoustics and soundproofing are not the primary consideration in the blueprint of an architectural project. Nobody notices any issue until the building is occupied with real people living there: until babies start to cry or until a wannabee teenage rocker becomes your neighbor. Likewise, the same issue happens in companies, where offices are deployed in large clear spaces: in one room, there is a meeting, and in the open space, employees are providing support to customers by phone. Therefore, unluckily, most of the solutions, are aftermarket solutions. It is difficult to implement them after the project is handed over. I explain thoroughly soundproofing projects that you can do at home or in your business.
